Visitor Visa

What is a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa?

This visa is the legal entry document used by immigrants willing to stay in Canada for a short period. The Canadian temporary visa is usually valid for about six months or lesser, and it can be used for different reasons, including business, tourism or general visits.

Anyone with a temporary visa can stay in Canada for the specified period, after which they are expected to return to their original country. Temporary resident visa holders cannot apply for citizenship during their stay, nor will they expect any health coverage to be allocated.

Also, there is only permission to work or study within the time frame of your stay. If you find a six-month or less program, you can opt for it and leave when the visa expires. Note that if you are working or studying during the period of your visit, you need to include it in your application for it to be considered legal.

What are the Eligibility Criteria I need to have for Temporary Resident Visas?

The major requirements for every temporary resident visa applicant are the following:

  • Purpose of visit: The person must have a valid reason for visiting Canada, such as tourism, visiting family or friends, attending a business meeting, or studying.
  • Valid passport: The person must have a valid passport or travel document that allows them to return to their country of origin.
  • Financial support: The person must have sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their stay in Canada and to return home.
  • Good health: The person must be in good health and may be required to undergo a medical examination if necessary.
  • No criminal record: The person must not have a criminal record and must not pose a security risk to Canada.
  • Good character: The person must have a good reputation and must not have violated human or international rights.
  • Ties to home country: The person must have strong ties to their home country, such as a job, home, and family, that will ensure they return home after their visit to Canada.
  • Non-involvement in illegal activity: The person must not have been involved in any illegal activity and must not pose a risk to Canada’s security.
  • Meeting the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act: The person must meet the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Regulations.

There are still more requirements which differ based on the type of TRV you decide to apply for.

What types of Canadian Temporary Resident Visas are available?

The types of Canadian temporary resident visas differ with the purpose of the visit. But the two main categories of TRV are:

This visa allows for multiple entries into the country for up to two years before renewal. It is issued to parents and grandparents of citizens of Canada.

This is also the Canadian tourist visa issued to foreign guests coming into the country for a visit, tourism or business.

WHO NEEDS A VISITOR VISA?

If you are not a Canadian citizen/ permanent resident of Canada and must come into the country for a visit, you must apply for a visitor visa. The only people exempted from applying for the visitor visa are citizens of the country (even if they hold dual citizenship) and permanent residents (even if their card has expired).

WHO NEEDS A SUPER VISA?

The super visa is only available for the parents and grandparents of permanent residents/Canadian citizens. Both these visas allow entry into the country, but the period they are allowed to stay differs.

Why Would I Need a Visitor Visa Extension?

A visa extension could be needed if your purpose for a visit is yet to be achieved. In such cases, you can opt for a visitor visa extension to help you achieve the things you need to do before travelling back. The Canadian government made this provision, and you are expected to apply for extension 30 days before the visa expires.

Do I need Super Visa Extension?

The super visa is certain to be valid for up to two years, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be some other unfinished business for the visa holders. Therefore, if you are in such a situation, you need to request an extension which should also be done 30 days before the visa expires.

If your extension is not approved when your visa expires, you can still stay in the country pending the outcome.

This is the legal document needed for everyone who isn’t a Canadian citizen/ permanent resident of Canada to gain access to Canada. Whether you are a student, worker, or tourist coming into the country for a while, you need a temporary visitor visa (TRV).

No. There are exemptions to Visa-exempt countries visiting the country. So, any citizen from those exempted countries can visit without a visa, but other countries need a TRV.

Yes. With the visitor visa, you can stay in Canada for six months or less, but if you need to extend your stay, you must apply for an extension. Note that the extension application should be submitted 30 days before the visa expires. It is important to note the expiration date on your visa to plan for any extension you need to make.

The minimum amount that would be sufficient for a year in Canada under the super visa is $100,000 per person. This amount is the worth of the policy to be bought when you apply for the super visa. Note that just submitting a quote will not suffice in the application process.

The standard time for the super visa processing is about 20 -24 months. It depends on the processing office, country, and the officer in charge, to determine the pace of application.
